The Flipside of the Coin is a durational immersive performance and live-feed video installation that collectively probes the fluid, unstable possibilities of presence and personas. Taking place across the two floors of Chemist Gallery, the project uses the building’s architecture, both its gallery and domestic spaces, as a narrative device. The audience moves through both floors, becoming part of the performance, while two live cameras stream and project between spaces, intertwining the acts of observation, documentation, and shared transformation.
Ten artists will inhabit the space: Downstairs, performances unfold in a formal gallery setting; upstairs, the domestic space becomes an unruly common, where artists navigate personal storyboards, draw on lived experience, and experiment with presence and vulnerability. Each artist reflects a different part of Mine’s accumulated communities - diverse in race, gender, mobility, and belief, to collectively create a reflection on how difference generates value.
This event is curated by Norman Mine, merging his experience of working collectively with community assets, together with his other persona, Dino Desica, through which he explores states of neurosis and vulnerability, and the tension between fiction and paranoia.
After the performance, the gallery will remain in a state of afterglow, traces of what has happened suspended in space: A scaffold structure, video projections, sound recordings, and fragments of objects and props reconfigured from the night’s actions. Yet this continuation is not without tension. There is a question at the heart of it: why do we feel the need to preserve, to stretch, to translate the living act into image, object, archive? Must performance always be turned into something else, a sculpture, a film, a document, as if its value depends on endurance?
